Welcome to How to Speak American

How to Speak American is a pro-democracy, culture-shifting campaign using the power of storytelling to amplify the voices of new Americans. By sharing real experiences and demystifying the citizenship process, we aim to engage communities, empower newly naturalized citizens, and refocus attention on a powerful yet often overlooked electorate. Join us as we build an inclusive democracy where every voice counts and every vote matters.

Who We Are

How to Speak American was founded to elevate the voices of immigrants and refugees, turning personal stories into powerful advocacy for civic engagement. At the helm is Tolu Olubunmi, an immigrant herself who has spent nearly three decades navigating the U.S. immigration system. Her story is a testament to the resilience and strength of new Americans, and her advocacy has protected hundreds of thousands of DREAMers from deportation.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to empower newly naturalized citizens through storytelling, education, and civic engagement. By guiding immigrants and refugees through the naturalization process and ensuring they are informed, registered, and ready to vote, we aim to build a stronger, more inclusive democracy. In 2024, How to Speak American will work tirelessly to increase naturalizations, mobilize new voters, and ensure the immigrant vote is not ignored.

Our vision

We envision a nation where every immigrant and refugee is fully integrated, warmly welcomed, and empowered to participate in the democratic process. A society where the act of voting is not only a fundamental right but also a celebrated civic duty for all citizens. Together, we can build a future where diverse voices strengthen the fabric of our democracy.
